Williams in tears at final memorial for Heath Ledger

michelle-williams-tears.jpg

It was the day Hollywood came to suburban Perth on the mournful mission of farewelling one of its own.

Heath Ledger’s closest family and friends yesterday joined A-list celebrities to commemorate the actor’s life at a tightly orchestrated service in his home town. He was later laid to rest at a private service, surrounded only by his 10 closest family members.

Among the hundreds of mourners were his former fiancee, Michelle Williams, actors Cate Blanchett, Rose Byrne and Bryan Brown, actor brothers Joel and Nash Edgerton, model Gemma Ward, Neil Armfield (director of Ledger’s film Candy), Perth rock band Eskimo Joe, West Coast Eagle David Wirrpanda and his former teammate, Ben Cousins.

A distraught Williams arrived at the memorial service at Penrhos College, in the riverside suburb of Como, leaning on the arm of Ledger’s sister, Kate. The pair were among the last to arrive, flanked by family members in a convoy of black BMWs.

One mourner, Western Australian Liberal MP Barbara Scott, described the service as “tastefully done, beautiful and moving”.

“Kate (Ledger) spoke of the unique bond she shared with her brother, how he would ring her three or four times a day and how he never forgot his friends even at the height of his fame.”

Mourners began arriving late in the morning at the exclusive girls college, Kate Ledger’s former school and a sister college to Ledger’s alma mater, Guildford Grammar.

In a military-like operation designed to keep the paparazzi at bay, guests were directed to park on a nearby oval and asked to show identification at the school gates before entering the grounds.

Blanchett made an unexpected appearance with Armfield. The Oscar nominee later delivered an emotional eulogy to Ledger, who died in his New York apartment 17 days ago from an accidental drug overdose. He was 28.

She spoke of her sadness at the loss of a gifted actor and fellow Hollywood Australian - and his “great potential” that would not be realised. “He achieved so much in his short life and was capable of so much in the future.”

The ceremony was held in the school’s theatre, where as a child Ledger would often sit in the front row watching his sister, Kate, perform in school plays.

Reflecting Ledger’s eclectic musical tastes, the soundtrack to the service included Seven Nation Army by the White Stripes, The Times They are A-Changin’ by Bob Dylan, the Beatles’ Here Comes the Sun and, finally, Come Together.

Ben Harper’s touching Happy Ever After, especially written for Ledger and Williams’ two-year-old daughter, Matilda, was also played.

Earlier in the morning, Ledger’s father, Kim, spoke to media waiting outside the family home in Applecross, inviting them to take photographs of guests. In return, he asked that the family be allowed to grieve in private.

“Having said that, we really do appreciate the outpouring and emotional support from all over the globe, which, suffice to say, we are luckier than most families,” Mr Ledger said.

After the service, the family went to Fremantle Cemetery, where Ledger was laid to rest. It is believed the body was cremated.

Last night a wake was held at Indiana Teahouse, a restaurant overlooking Cottesloe Beach.

As the sun went down over the beach, the public mingled with the media throng on the beach where Ledger loved to surf.

Michelle tells Matilda that daddy has gone away

Michelle Williams has reportedly told two year old daughter Matilda that her dad Heath Ledger has “gone away” following his death last month.

A source close to the former Dawson’s Creek star told Us Weekly: “Michelle was always really vulnerable, so this has shaken her quite a bit. She’s mourning and trying to figure out what to do next.”

“Michelle and the family are showering Matilda with love right now to cushion it so she isn’t really aware. [She] is too young to understand.”

“Michelle basically told Matilda, ‘Daddy went away.’ Matilda still doesn’t grasp it.”

On Tuesday, Michelle and Matilda arrived in Australia ahead of Heath’s funeral in Perth at the weekend.

Heath Ledger died of accidental drug overdose

Australian actor Heath Ledger died of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs, the New York City medical examiner’s office has ruled.

The 28-year-old actor’s body was discovered in his New York apartment on January 22.

Police found in the flat six types of prescription drugs, including pills to treat anxiety and insomnia.

Meanwhile, Ledger’s former fiancée Michelle Williams has flown into Australia ahead of the actor’s funeral in the western city of Perth.

Dressed in black, Williams was carrying the couple’s two-year-old daughter Matilda as she arrived in Perth on a Qantas flight from Los Angeles.

Matilda clutched a white stuffed rabbit, as the pair was escorted from the terminal amid tight security.

Williams refused to answer questions about plans for Ledger’s funeral, which is expected to take place this week.

The Brokeback Mountain star’s parents, sister and other family members have also arrived back home in Perth after attending two memorial services in the US.

Michelle Williams breaks her silence

Michelle Williams says she is broken hearted by the death of her former fiance, Heath Ledger.

In her first public statement since the tragedy, the 27-year-old actress asked to be left alone to grieve privately for the father of her two-year-old daughter, Matilda.

“I am the mother of the most tender-hearted, high-spirited, beautiful little girl, who is the spitting image of her father,” Williams said in a statement.

“All that I can cling to is his presence inside her that reveals itself every day. His family and I watch Matilda as she whispers to trees, hugs animals and takes steps two at a time and we know that he is with us still … My heart is broken.”

According to Us magazine, Williams “cried and screamed” when she heard that Perth-born Ledger had been found dead in his New York apartment.

The pair lived together in Brooklyn after falling in love on the set of Brokeback Mountain in 2005, but split last August.

Yesterday it emerged that a controversial video in which Ledger admitted he used to smoke five joints a day was allegedly secretly recorded by paparazzi.

American television shows Entertainment Tonight and The Insider were forced to drop the footage after Hollywood power players including Ledger’s Brokeback Mountain co-star Jake Gyllenhaal threatened to boycott the programs.

Williams and Matilda are expected to attend Ledger’s funeral in Perth in the coming days.

Funeral plans are being kept under wraps. There have been threats by the American fundamentalist Westboro Baptist Church, which has said it would picket the funeral.

Last week, church founder Fred Phelps, 78, said Ledger was in hell because he played a gay cowboy in Brokeback Mountain. Yesterday Phelps extended his hatred to the whole of Australia, saying God would soon pour out his wrath on the “cursed land down under”.

The church published a press release calling Australia “the most corrupt and decadent place on earth” and claiming Australia “leads the world in organising child sex tours for sex with little children in poor countries”.

“This filthy little island in the Pacific is a hotbed of sodomy, child sex tours and every other abominable thing obnoxious to God.”

The Kansas-based group, widely regarded as beyond the lunatic fringe of the religious right in America, regularly pickets the funerals of American soldiers killed in Iraq, claiming the war is a judgement on the United States for tolerating homosexuality.

Heath Ledger’s drug confessions on video

heath_matilda_rose.jpg

A video has emerged showing Heath Ledger at a drug-fuelled Hollywood party, talking about his own drug use.

The video, shot at a party at Chataeu Marmont in Los Angeles, dates from around January 2006. Although Heath isn’t showed taking any drugs in the clip, people with him are seen snorting cocaine and tables around the actor are strewn with drug paraphenalia.

At one point, Heath is heard saying: “I’m going to get so much s**t from my girlfriend [for being here]. We have a baby together… Matilda, Matilda Rose. I shouldn’t be here at all.”

He then spoke of his drug use, saying: “I used to smoke five joints a day for 20 years.”

A source close to the late actor told the New York Post that the video was filmed at a really bad time for Heath - just as his fame was skyrocketing due to the critical success of Brokeback Mountain: “He was hanging out with a bad crowd. He wasn’t cleaning up his act. He was making absolutely no effort … He was really into heroin. He wasn’t sleeping or communicating with anyone.”

According to Us Weekly, two months later, his then-girlfriend Michelle Williams drove him to Promises Treatment Center in Malibu, urging him to check into rehab but he refused, pledging to give up by himself. While he initially stayed off the partying scene, he was eventually pulled back in and another year later, his behaviour is became too much for Michelle.

The New York Post’s source explained: “She couldn’t take it any more. Heath wouldn’t show up for two to three days, and all of a sudden he would show up on her doorstep, an absolute wreck.”

“He was partying, doing drugs. She didn’t like the company he was keeping. She gave him an ultimatum … and threatened to get custody of the girl. He wanted to make it work, but it was this scene he was wrapped up in. Was he an addict? Yeah.”

“At the end of the day this is really tragic, he was a nice guy. I first met him in 2002. He was scared about the whole Hollywood thing … I don’t think he realized how crazy it was going to be. So many people wanted a piece of him.”

Heath’s body was found at his SoHo apartment last week and medical examiners are awaiting the results of toxicology tests before announcing the likely cause of death.

Tom Cruise & John Travolta conned by Heath Ledger dad imposter

An imposter claiming to be Heath Ledger’s dad fooled celebrities including Tom Cruise and John Travolta into consoling him in the wake of the actor’s death.

After Heath died on Tuesday, the man pretending to be Kim Ledger called the funeral home dealing with the body and persuaded them to make a book for him and his family at a luxury hotel in New York. The man also spoke to the Doctor Who performed the autopsy on Heath before turning his attention to Hollywood stars.

A source has revealed the man “had a couple of conversations” about the death with Tom Cruise and asked for emotional support from the star while he asked John Travolta to buy him a first class place ticket from Australia to Los Angeles and then onto New York.

John’s spokesperson confirmed the conversation, saying: “John spoke with the guy briefly before he realised he was an imposter. He did not make arrangements to buy him plane ticket.”

The man is also said to have called a third unidentified Hollywood star to get phone numbers for Heath’s former co-stars Mel Gibson and Christian Bale.

New York Police have said they’re investigating the hoax calls and the man will face charges of fraud and theft when caught.

Timeline of Ledger’s final moments

flag_wideweb__470×3350.jpg

Police have provided an in-depth timeline of Heath Ledger’s final moments, revealing the chaos that filled his Manhattan apartment in the moments after the Australian actor died.

It included a frantic call to former Full House star Mary-Kate Olsen, a massage therapist desperately trying to wake him, and a maid who was in Ledger’s bedroom in the moments before he died.

Police said Ledger, 28, probably died sometime between 1pm (5am Melbourne time) and 2.45pm (6.45am Melbourne time) on Tuesday of what authorities say may be an accidental drug overdose.

Ledger’s housekeeper, Teresa Solomon, arrived at his apartment at 12.30pm let herself in with her own key.

At 1pm, she went to his bedroom to change a light bulb, and saw Ledger sleeping and heard him snoring. She left the room without thinking anything was wrong.

At 2.45pm, a masseuse named Diana Wolozin showed up for her massage appointment with Ledger, who didn’t answer when she knocked on his door.

She then tried to call him on his mobile phone, but again got no response. She went into the bedroom, set up her massage table and again tried to wake Ledger.

Wolozin told police that Ledger was cold to the touch, but she just assumed he was unconscious.

She proceeded to grab his mobile phone and call Mary-Kate Olsen, whose number is programmed into the phone. Wolozin knew that Olsen and Ledger were friends, and she asked Olsen for advice on what she should do next.

Olsen, who also lives in Manhattan but was in California at the time, responded by saying she would send over her private security guards to help deal with the situation.

In the ensuing moments, Wolozin realised that Ledger might be dead, and called the 911 emergency number for an ambulance.

The emergency operator provided Wolozin directions on how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but it was too late.

Paramedics arrived minutes later - at about the same time as Olsen’s security guards.

The medical workers moved Ledger’s body to the floor and then used a defibrillator and CPR, but Ledger was pronounced dead at 3.36pm.

The police said Solomon, Wolozin and the three private security guards summoned by Olsen were co-operating with the investigation.

No illegal drugs were found in the apartment and there were no obvious signs of suicide, police said.
